Guiding Alaska

About the Series

Step behind the scenes of Tikchik Narrows Lodge and into the real lives of the expansive staff, quirky guides, and tireless owner Bud Hodson, as they pull out all the stops to delight their guests at this crown jewel of Bristol Bay, Alaska. Ride along from pre-dawn until long after dusk as Hodson and his dedicated team juggle four distinct businesses with one crystal clear mission: to deliver on the dream of a deluxe Alaskan fishing expedition.

It’s a hotel. Restaurant. Vintage airline. And guiding service on the world’s finest fishing waters.

The exquisite, fully-self-sufficient lodge welcomes elite guests from around the world from late June through September – each with their own fishing ambitions and needy expectations. Thirty live-in employees populate the tiny peninsula where Tikchik shines in Alaska’s endless summer – and where every egg, blanket, replacement part and 20,000 gallons of fuel must fly in. It’s hectic. Intense. Never-ending. And wildly fascinating as ‘all hands’ are on deck at all times to transform every getaway into the trip of a lifetime.

Bud-HodsonBud Hodson, Owner – a larger than life character in the sport fishing business, Bud’s a jack of all trades and master, it seems, of all. His calm, cool demeanor belies a high RPM motor that keeps him on the move – and on the fly – for every minute of Alaska’s 23-hour summer days. He cooks. He cleans. He tunes aircraft engines. Ties flies. Counsels guests. Referees guide wars. Wrangles supplies. And battles nature’s fickle whims as he strives to deliver on the dreams of every single guest.

Chip-KingChip King, Head Guide – Part fish whisperer. Part dispatcher. Part master negotiator. Chip manages the team of zany guides and makes the call on which guests go where every day. A twenty-plus-year veteran of the abundant, unforgiving Alaskan waters, Chip’s in charge of making every day a safe, smooth one filled with tight lines, big fish and happy anglers of every stripe.

Matt-SpenceMatt Spence, Head Chef – A culinary master with a make-do-with-what-you-have attitude, Matt and his team provide a five-star dining experience in the most remote area of Alaska.

Carol-SmithCarol Smith, Hospitality Manager – a total pro with sky-high standards for her team, this charismatic Kiwi runs a tight ship behind the scenes…and a placidly smooth one in front of them.

Gregarious Guides& Hospitality Staff – they’re in position at remote sites in the nether reaches of the Bristol Bay with a thirst for showing visitors an adventure of a lifetime and awaiting each day’s fresh supply of edgy, needy anglers of all skill levels.

Building Alaska

About the Series

Journey back to Alaska where three builders are each challenged with an extreme build in the middle of the wilderness. Each team will be faced with unique conditions, locations, and methods of getting men and materials to their off-the-grid locations. We'll follow each step of the process including the use of helicopters, float planes, ice road truckers, and boats to bring materials to the middle of nowhere. We'll see the highs and lows of each build as these ultimate contractors work against the clock of the abbreviated Alaskan build season and sometimes temperamental and anxious home owners who push to finish a project on time and on budget.

There's building... then there's building in Alaska and every step brings challenges most in the Lower 48 could never even contemplate. Solving and designing solutions for power, plumbing, septic, food storage, bathing, water supply, bear proofing, and the like make all these builds a journey back to a primitive time when shelter was as much about survival as it was comfort.

Behind the amazing homes built seemingly against all odds are the intrepid builders who represent the toughness and tenacity that is the hallmark of life in the last frontier. Part Robinson Crusoe and the last frontiersmen, the ability to adapt, improvise, and persevere in the face of remarkable challenges will make all viewers appreciate what it takes to own a piece of the Alaskan dream.

Lee Raymond

Lee-candidLee Raymond came to Alaska from a remote farm in Missouri, so he’s no stranger to getting things done with limited resources. Also a fixed wing pilot, Lee specializes in remote log cabin builds and harvests his own lumber straight from the land he’s building on. He snow machines in the logs in at night over frozen lakes, flies in materials in helicopters and even doubles as the camp cook. As a designer, builder and artist, Lee Raymond is the complete package of the Alaskan builder.

Jim Wagner

JimJim Wagner is a hunter, trapper, gold miner, and log cabin builder that is tired of all the traffic and noise in Gustavus, Alaska (population 400), so he is going to build a summer getaway cabin in Chicken, Alaska (population 12).

Chuck Gerwig

Chuck1Chuck Gerwig has made a living building dozens of cabins and structures in Alaska. He lives a quiet and simple life based on hard work, clean living and family. His build is a large, 2-story cabin at the base of a 4-mile wide, 26-mile-long-glacier.

About the Series

Armed and able. Rugged and rowdy. Join a tight-knit band of free-spirited frontiersmen as they make their livings – and their lives – on Kodiak Island one of Earth's most deadly settings where marauding bears and Mother Nature send a steady stream of risks and rewards their way. These outrageous characters battle through it all to live life on their own terms – and bring the wonders of their chosen home alive for their revolving door of hunting and fishing clients. They brawl through brutal weather, treacherous tides, ice, snow, and the ominous omnipresence of Ursus Arctos Middendorffi – the Kodiak Brown Bear – fearless 1,500-pound Gargantuas that rule the island with gaping maws, slashing claws the fearless bearing of acme predators.

It's island life in the extreme as our ensemble of eccentrics pursue their passions – and face down their demons – on the edge of civilization…then boat, fly and barrel their way into town to get provisions, pick up clients and blow off some steam in the funky, far-out hub of their island life. Watch in wonder as this hardy crew of ultimate outdoorsmen survive – and even thrive – amid the constant dangers of life on the mega-bear-infested wonderland of Kodiak.

Bob-MayBob May – guide extraordinaire and Kodiak's legendary 'Bear Whisperer'. Bob’s a legendary outfitter – leading his guests on life-changing trips for silver salmon and 200-pound halibut, the mystical Sitka blacktail deer and in-your-face confrontations with the uber-deadly Kodiak brown bear.

ErnieErnie Holland –former downhill racer and bare knuckles brawler – who flies and guides brown bear hunters throughout Alaska. He guides for bear and moose and puts his wings to work to move folks throughout Alaska. Bush and bear savvy, he's ruggedly handsome and brings a raucous sense of humor to every scene.

Bob-CusackBob Cusack – bush pilot without peer and a damn good guide in his own right. This salty Irishman is the archetypal Alaskan guide – pulled straight from the pages of a Jack London novel. And true to form, he treats his clients to hardcore pup-tent spike camps right in the heart of bear country.

Kyle & Troy Kyle and Troy Holland – Ernie’s sons, guides in training and strapping young men who are bush-and-bear savvy (the ultimate compliment up here), they're not just rough around the edges, they're ready for anything. And that's good because, here on the edge of civilization, there's no end of that.

Nicole & Marisa Marisa and Nicole Cusack - Cusack’s daughters throw a fantastic party as well as they cast a fishing rod. Definitely not described as sweet girls, they take after their father when it comes to stubbornness and survival in the wilds of Kodiak.
